 What is Ardkeen Online?

Ardkeen Online is an exciting Internet project for the Ardkeen area based at the Ardkeen Library. The Ardkeen Online website is continuously developing. Ardkeen Online can provide you with the technical skills to create and maintain your own simple website. Ardkeen Online is your community website   – anyone can contribute to the content of the site.  

What kind of information will be in Ardkeen Online?

 

Ardkeen Online will contain a wide range of local information – the aim is to create a one-stop-shop for all things related to Ardkeen. Of course this will depend on you! The majority of the content will come from members of the Ardkeen community. Ardkeen Online needs your input, ideas and support to make it a success.

 

So how can I get involved and create my own website?

 

Call in to your local library for an information leaflet, fill this out and return it to the Ardkeen Library. Alternatively you can contact Mary on 051 843633 or by email ardkeenonline@waterfordcity.ie to arrange a meeting.

 

Do I need to have a business or run a club to get involved?

 

Ideally yes, anyone can get involved in Ardkeen Online, clubs, societies, schools, businesses, resident associations, interested individuals…. If you would like to set up a website within Ardkeen Online we would be delighted to hear from you.

 

Who runs Ardkeen Online?

 

Ardkeen Online is run by the project staff at Ardkeen Library, Mary is available to help you set up your website and teach you how to maintain it.

 

How can I benefit from joining Ardkeen Online and creating my own website?

 

With Ardkeen Online you can be part of your local online community, learn new skills, help others to keep up-to-date with what is happening in their community. You will be helping to create and maintain a valuable and vibrant community resource. 

 

Is it difficult to create a website?

 

No! Anyone even with limited technical expertise can create a website on Ardkeen Online. The Ardkeen Online staff offer ongoing training and support until users are confident in using the Ardkeen Online software.

 

How will I update my website?

 

You will choose your website name and password – only you will know your password and have access to your part of the Ardkeen Online website. With a little training you will be able to update your website quickly and easily from any Internet point.

 

How much will it cost me?

 

Ardkeen Online is free to all users – we just ask that you maintain your own website on Ardkeen Online, so that Ardkeen Online is always useful and up-to-date.

 

How big will my website be?

 

This is up to you! You can have just a homepage or you can create and maintain as many pages, as you want.

 

What if I don’t have access to the Internet?

 

Remember, if you are a library member you can use the Public Access PCs in Ardkeen Library.  PaintShop Pro 9 is installed on four of the PCs in Ardkeen and one PC has a scanner attached.   

 

Does my PC need any particular specifications?

 

To support the Ardkeen Online software you will need to have Internet Explorer version 5.5 or above. (You can check this by opening a web page, clicking on ‘Help’ and then ‘About Internet Explorer’) If you are going to use images on your website you will need to use software that will compress your images and make them quick to download.

 

What is the Agora Project?

 

Ardkeen Online is an initiative of the Agora Project, it is managed by the Waterford City Council Library Service and The Library Council. It is funded through the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government through the Information Society Fund.
