About Aromatherapy:
Aromatherapy is the practice of using aromatic essential oils to enhance the quality of health and well being. From the earliest days of civilisation, herbs and plants have been used in many ways for their benefits. The Egyptians, Ancient Greeks and Romans anointed their bodies with scented oils for pleasure as well as medicinal benefits and burnt aromatic herbs and woods as offerings to the gods. The use of magic smoke, in the form of incense, has survived in almost all major religions in both East and West, and the use of fumigation (burning of plants) with aromatic plants remained standard medical practice right up to the present century. For example, until relatively recently, French hospitals burnt Thyme and Rosemary in the wards as a disinfectant. Ironically the practice was discontinued at about the same time that research proved how effective both these plants are as bactericides! What are essential oils? They are concentrated liquid extracts, usually obtained by distillation from plants, herbs, berries, flowers and woods. Each essential oil has its'own unique composition, fragrance and benefits. The therapeutic effects of the oils act on both the mind and the body, helping to maintain and restore health and well-being. The oils work by inhalation of the aroma and by absorption of minutes quantities via the skin. A word of caution: Do not embark lightly on self-use of aromatherapy oils. The great majority of essential oils are non-toxic when handled sensibly; that is to say, in small quantitities and in low dilution (mixed with a vegetable oil). There are, though, some which are higly toxic, even in small amounts, and others which may give rise to toxicity if used over a long period of time. Babies, young children, pregnant women, people suffering from epilepsy, the elderly, and people with sensitive skins should avoid the use of aromatherapy oils when in doubt. (***Do not use Rosemary if suffering with epilepsy or untreated high blood pressure. Peppermint counteracts the benefits or homeopathic remedies and should not be stored near them. Geranium should not be used after 4pm as it has been known to induce nightmares. Some Citrus oils are photo-toxic and may cause sensitivity to sunlight). What type of massage is it: Massage is the most effective way of using essential oils, particularly as it combines the power of touch with the benefits of the oils. Aromatherapy massage is a very gentle, soothing, relaxing treatment during which no stimulating strokes are used. Lymphatic drainage techniques to support the immune system is often part of the therapy. Excellent for those in need of deep relaxation and suffering from chronic ailments. Please note: Regular treatments (i.e. once a week for a couple of weeks) are hightly recommended to fully benefit from this therapy.
