Harry and the Unforgivable Curse

In the Prisoner of Azkaban when Peter if discovered to be Scabbers and the person who betrayed the Potter's to Voldemort by Lupin Harry Hermione and Ron in the Shrieking shack near the end of the discussion they all have Remus and Sirius fully in then to Kill Peter,

Quote

'Remus!' Pettigrew squeaked, turning to Lupin instead, writhing imploringly in front of him.  'You don't believe this ... wouldn't Sirius have told you they'd changed the plan?'
'Not if he thought i was the spy, Peter,' said Lupin 'I assume that's why you didn't tell me, Sirius?' he said casually over Pettigrew's head.
'Forgive me, Remus,' said Black.
Not at all, Padfoot, old friend,' said Lupin, who was now rolling up his sleeves. 'And will you, in turn, forgive me for believing you were the spy?'
'Of course,' said Black and the ghastly grin flitted across his gaunt face.  He too, began rolling up his sleeves. 'Shall we kill him together?'
'Yes, I think so,' said Lupin Grimly.  pg 273 the Prisoner of Azkaban (UK pb edition

The only curse they could use (that i know of) to kill Peter is Avada Kedavra, and this was not a rash decision, Lupin and Sirius were taking in the heat of the moment. It was methodically thought out. Would both Sirius and Black be willing to give up there freedom to avenge the death of James and Lily? I think there must be some exceptions to the life imprisonment for using an unforgivable curse rule, for Sirius and Remus to decide to kill Peter in this manner.

Although a short while after this Harry explains his reason why he doesn't want Remus and Sirius to Kill Peter is because he didn't think James would have wanted his best friends to become killers, for Peters sake.
So maybe Remus and Sirius where doing it simply for revenge, although I find it hard to believe they would want to sacrifice there freedom when they could simply hand him to the Dementors at the school.
