Snape?  What was her thinking?

After finishing HBP I’m dying to get back to forum debating so I will begin with one of my favourite topics, Snape.

Now for the purpose of this argument I am assuming Snape is still in league with the Order  murdered Dumbledore under Dumbledore’s and of course this is all known only by Dumbledore and himself.

This isn’t a completely baseless assumption but instead of rambling on for a few pages I’m going to summarise it in point form.

Snape made the Unbreakable vow with Narcissa,  This means Snape would either have to kill Dumbledore or die himself.  I believe Snape did this in the believe that he would be sacrificing himself  so that the he could keep his important double agent role and spy on the Death eater.   I don’t believe Snape intended to or wanted to Kill Dumbledore, he wanted to sacrifice himself.  Three pieces of evidence I have for this.

  1. Hagrid informs Harry that Snape and Dumbledore were arguing about something, that Snape told Dumbledore that ‘he took too much for granted.’

  1. Dumbledore is dismissive of Harry to the point of getting angry why Harry suggests his Snape is still a Death eater theory Dumbledore knows (or Knew) something Harry does not, in order to provide Harry with one last protection against Voldemort  (I’ll develop this point at the end).

  1. On the Astronomy Tower Dumbledore pleads with Snape and Snape is non too please.  ‘Snape gazed for a moment at Dumbledore, and there was revulsion and hatred etched in the harsh lines of his face,’ I don’t believe this is in disbelief that Snape was still in league with the Death eaters  and I definitely don’t think this was Dumbledore pleading for his life.  In my opinion this leaves only one thing, Dumbledore is pleading for Snape to kill him in order to protect Draco, Harry (I’ll elaborate on this point later) and of course Snape.

(Snape is not too happy about this because he believes he will be sacrificing himself, not Dumbledore and feels like Harry does that this is (or at least looks like) a cowardly act.  This could also explain why Snape gets upset (or at least angry when Harry calls him a coward.)

To conclude I believe Dumbledore wants Snape to kill him in order to prove to Volde and the death eaters once and for all that he is on their side and not the Orders.  This could lead Volde to put an unprecedented amount of faith and trust in Snape and if ,as I believe Snape is still under Dumbledore’s order, Dumbledore has indeed provided Harry with a great protection, Snape who will be so trusted by Volde will invariably be his right hand man and  probably involved in any attempt Volde is planning on Harry life.  Volde or Harry will not be expecting this which leaves him in a great position for Snape to thwart any attempt on Harry’s life.

Ok it’s a bit out there but I just can’t believe Snape wanted to kill Snape

On and just one more thing.  Snape is finally given the DADA post he’s wanted for so long. And the curse apparently does not let up.  Why would Dumbledore give Snape the job after 15 years?  Ok this evidence isn’t exactly evidence but it seems strange no?  Was this Dumbledore vouching for Snape when perhaps some in the Order were questioning Snape’s loyalty, perhaps he was suspected after Sirius’ death or for the murder of Emmeline Vance.  After all how could Snape not have known about the Dark Lord’s plan to kill Black?  Just playing Devils Advocate there. Although Dumbledore readily admits he makes mistakes in Phoenix, rather big mistakes given his rather big abilities.  However I don’t believe this is one of these occasions, I think maybe Dumbledore knows more than he’s letting on, which is in keeping with the whole series.
