Theory on Thestrals

Is there any significance to the fact that Harry could not see them in his third year?

Surly he would have witnessed Voldemort killing his parents and so should have always been able to see thestrals.
I believe there are only two logical reasons why Harry could not see thestrals until he witnesses Cedric die

(1) Harry was not looking at his parents at the time Voldemort used the deadly curse on them and so technically did not witness death. or
(2) That Harry was transported somewhere else by Lily or James in an attempt to save his life.

I can't see it in any way suggesting that harry's parents are infact still alive because as of what happened when Harry dueled Voldy in the Prisoner of Azkaban (unfortunately)
I don't know if this is at all relevent to what may happen in the next books, but you never know.
